Acid rain is formed by the reaction of sulfur-containing gases. The most important of which is sulfur dioxide with oxygen in the presence of ultraviolet rays from the sun, and it produces sulfur trioxide, which then combines with water vapor in the atmosphere, to give sulfuric acid.
