This is how the Vlookup works: 

  • Organize the data is the first step.
  • In step 2 Inform the function of the search criteria.
  • Tell the function where to look in step 3
  • Step 4: Instruct Excel to produce data from a specific column.
  • Exact or approximate match in step five.

The VLOOKUP function can be written as follows in its most basic form: =VLOOKUP(What you want to look up, where you want to look it up, column number in the range holding the value to return, return an approximate or exact match - specified as 1/TRUE, or 0/FALSE).
