Google authenticator works by using two algorithms Time-based one-time password or TOTP that provides a one-time password or OTP that uses the current time as a source of uniqueness and HMAC-based One-time Password algorithm or HOTP that provides symmetric generation of human-readable passwords or values, each used for only one authentication attempt to provide a method of authentication.
