There have only ever been six, although since 1869, nine Justices, including one Chief Justice, have served.
The Supreme Court currently consists of nine justices: one Chief Justice and eight District Court judges. There have been 104 Assistant Justices throughout the history of the Court, with The Honorable John G. Roberts, Jr. serving as its 17th Chief Justice.
