According to WHO, anyone who is in good health, is at least 17 years old (or 16 years old with parental consent in some states), weighs at least 110 pounds or 50 kg, not have donated blood in the last 56 days or 8 weeks, not have had a tattoo or piercing in the last 4 months, not have had a cold, flu, or fever in the last 2 weeks and not have had hepatitis B or C, HIV, or syphilis can donate blood to people who have :
- have internal or external bleeding due to an injury
- sickle cell disease or another illness that affects the blood
- are undergoing cancer treatment
- are undergoing surgery, such as cardiovascular or orthopedic surgery
- have an inherited blood disorder
- are undergoing a transplant
- need treatments involving plasma or other blood products
