The difference between could and would is that :

  • Could is the past tense of can that expresses ability and permission while would is the past tense of will that expresses preference, probability, request, offer and wishes.
  • could is used to express ability or past possibility while would can be used to show willingness or when we imagine a situation.

Examples:

  • Would meet you, but I was little busy.
  • I could barely walk when I was a baby.
