The corpse floats on the water because upon death the anaerobic bacteria present in the viscera move to the abdominal cavity due to damage to the intestinal cells and the process of dismantling sugar and proteins begins. This disintegration process leads to the production of methane, hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxiden. These light gases transform the corpse to what looks like a balloon and then begins to rise .
