The auxiliary verb "do" is used at the beginning of a question when you want to inquire about something that happened in the present simple for someone standing in front of you or when you want to talk about a group of people, such as: Do you need me, and "do" is used when you ask about an absent singular person
Such as: Does Muhammad do the duty?
And when you want to inquire about something that happened in the simple past, we use did, such as: Did Sarah go to school yesterday?.
