viruses adapt to their environment and  evolve because they multiply  more than once, they have relatively high mutation rates. When combined with this high mutation rate, natural selection allows the viruses to rapidly adapt to changes in the host environment .In addition, most viruses provide large numbers of their offspring, so any mutated genes can be transferred to large numbers of virus offspring in a short time.
