Was is represented two types of verbs, it’s linking verb, and also helping verb. If it’s used before the main verb, it becomes a helping verb, but if it’s used as a main verb, it becomes a linking verb.

Examples: He was playing, while his mother was cooking. (helping verb).

My father was an army officer. (linking verb).

Examples: I was writing my homework, while my mother was cooking. (auxiliary verb).
