Bilharzia, also known as schistosomiasis, is a disease caused by parasitic worms. The three continents most affected by Bilharzia are Africa, Asia, and South America.
In Africa and the Middle East, the parasites Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium are prevalent. In South America and some Caribbean islands, Schistosoma mansoni is common. In Asia, particularly China, Indonesia, and other Southeast Asian countries, Schistosoma japonicum is found1. Other species, such as Schistosoma intercalatum and Schistosoma mekongi, are found in specific regions.
It’s important to note that these parasites thrive in areas with poor sanitation and in close proximity to freshwater sources. As such, efforts to control and eliminate Bilharzia often focus on improving water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions, as well as providing preventive treatment in affected communities.
