Secretary Bill Blair wrote on Twitter, "We will extend restrictions on unnecessary travel with the United States until November 21. Our decisions remain based on the best public health recommendations available to ensure the safety of Canadians."

The border between the United States and its free trade partners, Canada and Mexico, was closed in March and has been extended every month since then.

Crossing is only permitted for the purposes of shipping commercial goods and for travel deemed necessary.

"Everyone understands that we want things to return to normal. We want the borders to open," Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told Radio Hamilton in Ontario, ahead of the official announcement of the extension of the measure.

And Canadian international borders also remain closed with other countries until late October at a minimum, with the exception of those whose presence is deemed necessary on Canadian soil.

Canadian and foreign travelers coming to Canada are subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine.
