Are is a  linking verb. It's also a helping(auxiliary) verb. for ex:

They are happy.

verb are in this example is a linking verb 

They are playing football.

verb are in this example is an auxiliary verb

verb are is a form of v to be that's used  in the present when the subject of the sentence is plural
