Both had laid and had lain are true, but they have different meanings. Laid is the third form of the verb lay, which means put gently , while lain is the third form of lie, which means take the horizontal position on a surface.

Examples: She had laid the dress on the bed, before she went out.

The cat had lain on the floor for some hours.
