Salt is used in dishwashers for these reasons:

  • Salt eliminates calcium and magnesium ions from water, providing a subistitute of sodium ions - and these are not likely to cause harm and able to be dissoled in water resulting in soft water.
  •  Cleansing agents act better in the presence of salt.
  • Salt protects the dishwasher against the formation of scales on its internal parts.
