China wants Taiwa  for many reasons. The most important ones are reinforcing its power;

This would support the government's efforts to promote increasing nationalism in China.

The location of Taiwan is another issue; if China were to establish facilities farther out in the Pacific Ocean, this would increase its military power and frighten neighbouring countries.

The American "island chain plan," which essentially consists of a barrier of islands between the Chinese mainland and the Western Pacific ocean, would be disrupted if Taiwan were under US control.

According to the Australian Institute of International Affairs, if China had sovereignty over Taiwan, it would also have control over the principal shipping lanes in Asia.
